CH1601 – Organic and Biological Chemistry 1

Lecturers:

Dr N. S. Keddie, Professor D. O’Hagan and Professor A. D. Smith

*Module Convenor: Dr I. A. Smellie

Laboratory Co-ordinator: Dr I. A. Smellie

Aim:

The aim of this course is to provide a foundation in organic and biological chemistry. The module will provide an introduction to the nature of bonding in organic chemistry and to the structure of simple organic compounds. Students will become acquainted with the common functional groups in organic chemistry and how they react. They will learn the basics of organic reaction mechanisms and the basics of organic spectroscopy. They will learn the structure of the basic molecular building blocks found in biology and how these building blocks relate to macromolecules found in biology.
